Beating the Bounds

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Welcome to the Beating the Bounds project website.

Beating the Bounds was a partnership project led by English Heritage working with the Vale and Downland Museum, Wantage, Oxfordshire.

Eighteen people took part in a range of workshops organised by the National Monuments Record (NMR) between February and October 2006. The NMR is the public archive for English Heritage and holds over nine million photographs and records on the archaeology and historic buildings of England.

The aims of the project were to:

  • help people use archives to learn from and enjoy their local historic environment
  • support learning by using a problem-solving approach which builds on the skills and experience of group members
  • trial the use of digital toolkit technology in a group environment
  • share learning through a project website

We worked in small research groups to investigate the boundaries of Wantage and adjoining parishes by using the resources of the NMR and locally held material. Each group combined images, text, sound and film to create digital stories of their investigations.

We hope you enjoy viewing our digital stories on this website.
