Beating the Bounds

MEDIEVAL

The Challenge

If you a look at a modern large-scale Ordnance Survey map of Grove you will see marked in the north-east corner of the parish the site of the medieval village of Tulwick. If we go back over a hundred years to the first edition, 1875 map, we find that an administrative boundary divides the fields where the village once stood between the hamlets of Grove and Charlton.

We set out to discover:

  • When were people living here? What did their village look like and why was it deserted?
  • How does the village of Tulwick fit into the pattern of parishes, townships, hamlets and manors within our study area? What can the boundary alignment recorded in the nineteenth century reveal about the history of Tulwick?
